The art of Christian Dugardeyn, known by his artistic name DUGA, is above all an intense exploration of the human being. Born in Brussels in 1963, he developed a fascination for drawing and painting at a very early age. This passion never left him: even today, he continues to draw and paint with the same expressive urgency that shaped his artistic vision as a child.

DUGA’s journey is quite unique. Before fully embracing his artistic career, he followed a demanding scientific path that led him toward medicine and medical imaging. This dual perspective—scientific and artistic—deeply nourishes his work. Where medical imaging studies the physical structure of the human body, his art explores the emotional and psychological dimensions of human existence.

In his artworks, characters sometimes appear distorted, fragmented, or reinvented. Yet these transformations are never accidental. For the artist, moving away from strict realism allows him to approach a deeper truth about humanity. Faces, bodies, and silhouettes become mirrors of our emotions, vulnerabilities, and contradictions.

DUGA’s work exists at the crossroads between figuration and abstraction. His lines—often drawn with rapid, instinctive gestures—tell a story. They move across the canvas like living energy, giving birth to powerful and vibrant characters.

His inspirations are diverse and include:

  • Art Brut

  • Expressionism

  • Primitive arts

  • Street art

  • Childlike and spontaneous artistic expression

All these influences blend together to create a unique artistic universe.

For DUGA, creating art is not simply producing objects. It is a necessity—a way of constantly questioning the mystery of what it means to be human.
